Are you listening?

This collection affirms Ilaria Boffa’s exploration of poetry and poetics, which now involves collaborations with international avant-garde musicians on sound projects, in addition to her own sound experiments. It is precisely this combination of landscapes that underpins the originality of this work, the substance of which draws on sources as varied as Timothy Morton and William Blake, but also personal narratives. About Sounds About Us follows a sequential logic in Boffa’s thinking and thus the journey the reader takes.

Boffa refers to her work as ‘sonopoems”. This reflects the broader concept of sonopoetry, an art form that compounds salient structural features of two arts. It also relates to sonopoetics, whose roots lie in the 18th century with Joshua Steele, who attempted to recreate the aural poem in visual form by reconfiguring texts as acoustic-somatic performances, and notating microcomponents of utterances, or ‘sounds within’. This was a method compensating for the obvious unavailability of recording devices, and later applied in contemporary sonopoetics.

State ascoltando?

L’autrice definisce i propri componimenti poetici ‘poesie sonore’.

The Sounds of Language

On the pond boots root and
dogs predict the mutability of doubts.
Holes dug between hunger and rage.

Saturation and desaturation
the notation of void. Always vigilant
sounds are as good an answer as language.

I Suoni del Linguaggio

Sull’argine gli stivali mettono radici e
i cani predicono la volatilità del dubbio.
Buche scavate tra fame e rabbia.

Saturazione e desaturazione
la notazione del vuoto. Risposta vigile
i suoni sono linguaggio.

Charting Time

That window through which we look
it’s your window.
A window with blinds banging
fiercely in the cold.
We chart territories, oaths,
peoples walking, mapping stillness.
Unexpectedness opens
and we face the crevasse, the vastness,
loneliness.
I’ve crossed time for you
past and future.
I’m here, immobile, a whiteness in me.
Leaning against this wall
I yearn for the calm.

Tracciare il Tempo

Quella finestra da dove guardiamo
è la tua finestra.
Una finestra con gli scuri che sbattono
impetuosi nel freddo.
Tracciamo territori, giuramenti,
popoli che camminano mappando la fissità.
L’inatteso si apre
e affrontiamo il crepaccio, la vastità,
la solitudine.
Per te sono stata, attraverso il tempo,
passato e futuro.
Sono qui, immobile nel mio pallore.
Contro questo muro
attendo impaziente la calma.

The Sounds of Language

There are six degrees of freedom
systems of bodies may experience
because of motion.
They can move by translation
and rotation, shifting in space
and revolving around a centre.
You can hear them rolling
to and fro.

Language is not pertinent.

I Suoni del Linguaggio

I sistemi di corpi sperimentano
sei gradi di libertà
nel movimento.
Si spostano per traslazione
e rotazione, shiftano nello spazio
e ruotano attorno a un centro.
Puoi sentirli ondeggiare
avanti e indietro.

Il linguaggio non è pertinente.

Ode for Plastics

The slowness of these years.
I’ve heard a girl humming:

I have no soul
I don’t know love
I am water
I don’t remember why I’m here
I don’t remember why
I don’t remember.

We are plastics
unable to unbride and decompose.
Frozen in time.

Ode alla Plastica

La lentezza di questi anni.
Ho sentito una ragazza cantare:

Non ho anima
non conosco amore
sono acqua
Non ricordo perché sono qui
Non ricordo perché
Non ricordo

Siamo plastica
incapaci di separarci e decomporci.
Congelati nel tempo.

Sequence

Folded back on the floor, the body
where beams filter among
toes, womb, hips, lips.
Torn to shreds, open
a cleft in the concrete.

Where beams filter on the floor
legs torn to shreds
the spine scratching on the concrete.
Incomplete in its standing, the body
folded back in the womb.

My legs, pale
the spine scratching on the concrete.
I may only expose the wrists
where beams filter in sequence
each ligament and nerve.

Leave nothing of us.
Trees encroach on the hills

Sequenza

Rovesciato sul pavimento, il corpo
dove i raggi filtrano tra
le dita dei piedi, grembo, anche, labbra.
Ridotto a brandelli, aperto
una fenditura nel cemento.

Dove i raggi filtrano sul pavimento
ridotte a brandelli le gambe
la schiena graffiata sul cemento.
Incompleto nel suo stare eretto, il corpo
rovesciato sul grembo.

Le mie gambe, esangui
la schiena graffiata sul cemento.
Posso solo esporre i polsi
ogni nervo e legamento
dove i raggi filtrano in sequenza.

Non lasciare nulla di noi.
Gli alberi sconfinano sulle colline.

On the Move

It took 10 hours and a few stops. Then the desert, into the red. Nomads, Bedouin, Tuareg and Berbers populate a land of clay and kings on the move. Visible, the plateau, flat and linear natural border that beats back. In remote camps, the buzzing of electric pumps, wi-fi. Berber women sit alone, rinsing dishes in the tents. They laugh and wave at me to join. I record their voices, fixing the hijab on my parka.

Are we all post-humans?

In Movimento

Ridono e mi invitano a raggiungerle.

Siamo tutti post-umani?

The Sounds of Language

What is language? Speech, dialogue, soliloquy. The noise of hail. Data communication, subject-related, conceptual meaning, minimalism. A flow. Verbal and non-verbal, wireless, through hands, a whisper on lips. Whether you listen, I might send messages, perhaps you’ll notice distress, anxiety. Sometimes we should not translate. Water reproduces without instructions. Why do we need synopsis? Read each sentence and its punctuation, deviate, research, elaborate and expand upon. Avoid tenuous arguments.

Cut verbosity. Tacere.

I Suoni del Linguaggio

Cos’è il linguaggio? Discorso, dialogo, soliloquio. Il rumore della grandine. Comunicazione di dati, tematiche, significato concettuale, espressione minima. Flusso. Verbale e non-verbale, wireless, attraverso mani, un sussurro sulle labbra. Se ascolti, potrei inviare messaggi, forse noterai stress, ansia. A volte non dovremmo tradurre. L’acqua riproduce senza istruzioni. Evitare discussioni inconsistenti.

Tagliare la verbosità. Tacere.
