Dalla prefazione:

I am convinced that, to the best of my knowledge, very few contemporary authors have emotion/life/poetry bonds that are as immediate and essential as Monica Guerra. I first met her personally at a public reading one evening at which she presented a few fragments of what has since become Sulla Soglia/On the Threshold. It was the end of November 2016. I was very impressed by her poems, and by the way she delivered them. Poetry readings are usually full of contrition, the authors read their poems without lifting their head from the paper, with sweaty hands and a completely dry mouth, and most of the time they rush through the verses in a very monotone voice. The collective slumber, in these circumstances, becomes a must rather than an urge. Monica, however, read with so much passion that, near the end, two tears welled up in her eyes. This touched a chord deep inside. I realize that everyone “feels” a poem’s beauty before thinking about its meaning, but that deep emotion, so rare, and so true, made me think that the real signifier behind those words was people, souls. At the end of the evening Monica explained to me, almost as if she was trying to excuse her surge of emotion – such a rare event at a reading, especially in this country –, where the verses came from, and the urgency behind them. I convinced her that these poems should become a book, they should be released to reach the greatest number of souls possible. Those verses have become a book, they’ve been released, and will reach the greatest number of souls possible.

6th July 2016

the tear across the left
corner, the aisle, every
day is your going again
to my short-term eye

but, after all,
living is not all in life.

6 luglio 2016

la lacrima lungo l’angolo
sinistro il passaggio, ogni
giorno riscorre il tuo andare
nel mio occhio in prestito

che poi cosa vuoi che sia,
la vita non è tutto.

5th July 2016

everything takes time.
Even dying. To say that’s enough.
Closed. To go away.

5 luglio 2016

ci vuole tempo a fare tutto.
Anche a morire. A dire basta.
Chiuso. Andare via.

5th July 2016

I will slim my hand and falter
your fingers silent, the eye fleeting
on each of the sails on your knees.

5 luglio 2016

sottiglierò la mano e stenterò
in silenzio le tue dita, l’occhio latitante
sulle tue vele in ginocchio.

5th July 2016

in this hole too gloomy
to grow pale the final effort,
your goodbye, my elegy.
the black wall is the disease.

5 luglio 2016

in questo buco troppo cupo
per sbiadire l’ultima fatica,
il tuo saluto, la mia elegia.
il nero muro è la malattia.

4th July 2016

the fear of fading slowly
dead calm in the throat
one limb at a time
the rising water.

la paura è un morire piano
calma piatta nella gola
un arto alla volta
l’acqua che sale.
